Scrapheap
Orchestra
Coming soon:
The Scrapheap Orchestra Television Documentary
At the start of May 2011 Daniel Bangham, the
owner of Wood, Wind & Reed was asked if he would like
to contribute to a new BBC4 documentary, the Scrapheap
Orchestra. Being a classical instrument maker he
of course jumped at the chance.
2 months later, he had produced 2 oboes and
2 bassoons which have been used by the BBC Concert Orchestra
with Charles Hazlewood leading them in Tchaikovsky's 1812
overture.
The aim of this venture was to produce musical
instruments solely from a wide variety of scrap materials.
In Daniel's case, golf clubs, cutlery, computer spares and
the odd bit of scrap ply wood.
Having been followed closely by a film crew
over the months of making Daniel and other UK instrument makers
have demonstrated the thought and effort needed to produce
a musical instrument, and shown the skill and knowledge that
goes into the beautiful professional oboes and bassoons that
are used by musicians today.
The resultant performance at the Proms this
23rd July was outstanding considering the 10 weeks of manufacturing
time allowed for this project. Daniel would like to extend
his thanks to the four wind players of the BBCCO who performed
on his unique Bassoons and Oboes.
