Plastic recorders can be cleaned in warm water and washing liquid. Re-grease the joints after drying with petrolium jelly ( vascaline )

Wooden instruments are more delicate and must never be washed. You can oil the instrument with bore, linseed or almond oil but make sure you don't get any oil on the "fipple" or windway area of the headjoint. If you think the windway is dirty, then take it to an experience player or repairer to have it cleaned.

To protect your instrument you can get "instrument rolls" these are padded pouches that the instrument slots into. They are compact and very secure for the recorder. Availble in a variety of sizes and number of slots, so you can carry more that one instrument at a time
